How Do Central Air Conditioning Units Run, and How Much Do They Cost?

How do you find a good central air conditioning system? The way
that central air conditioners are rated is according to their
seasonal energy efficient ratio (SEER). The seer is a
calculation of the cooling output divided by the power input,
which brings up an approximate climate average. Therefore, the
higher the seer the better the central air conditioner you will
be getting.

What is a good seer number to base on? Many older air
conditioners are going to have a number around six or seven.
However, new standards that will be in effect in 2006 will set
the seer requirement at 13, which is an improvement of 30% from
what it currently is at 10.

What a central air conditioner is doing is cooling and
dehumidifying the air. What the system uses to accomplish this
is a condenser, evaporator coil, and refrigerant piping to
operate. The central air conditioner has a couple different
kinds of units, a split system and a packaged central air
conditioner.

A split system has an actual split system, meaning there is a
separation between the condenser and evaporator. The condenser
and compressor are in a cabinet outside the house, as the
evaporator is in its own cabinet inside. As hot air is removed
and transported to an evaporator coil as a warm liquid, the
expansion of the liquid causes it to cool, thus cooling the air.
If your home has a furnace but no air conditioner, then this is
the way to go.

Another type of central air conditioning unit is a packaged
central air conditioner. With this system, the condenser,
compressor, and evaporator are all in one cabinet placed on the
roof or next to the house. This kind of air conditioner often
includes electric heating coils or a natural gas furnace. This
type of unit eliminates the need for a separate furnace indoors
as the air conditioner and central heater are combined.

The price of getting a central air conditioning unit varies like
everything in life from company to company. Some of the
determining factors include whether you're getting a 2 Ton
system through 5 Ton system, if you need the compressor
installed on your roof, and where you live. A base price for a
2 Ton system without it being installed on the roof is going to
run around $2700. A good site to check out prices for a central
air conditioner is listed below:

If you are looking to upgrade your air conditioner, or get one
put in your home for a first time, there are plenty of places
you can go to look. The good thing about central air
conditioning is that it is quiet and environmentally friendly.
In order to find what kind of air conditioner is best for you,
it is smart to contact a professional. The article link below
discusses certain characteristics to look for to find a quality
contractor.

If you are replacing an air conditioner, you're going to have to
match the size of the previous one to make sure the unit is not
to big and not too small. To get more quotes to find the best
air conditioner for you, check out the site below:

Central air conditioning is going to be more efficient than room
air conditioners. As stated above, they are out of the way
creating a quiet environment, and they are good for the
environment. If you are hoping to save some money, it is
recommended that you buy an energy-efficient air conditioner.
This will reduce the energy that is being used by your central
air conditioner, thus lowering your electricity bill.

There are several different routes that can be taken when
considering whether you want a room air conditioner or central
air conditioner, what kind of central air conditioning unit, and
where to buy from. That is why research and getting quotes from
many places is recommended to ensure that you get the unit for
you at a reasonable price.

Basic Air Conditioning Repairs

Most electrical items will develop faults and breakdown at some point, and unfortunately, air conditioners aren't any different! However, some air conditioning repairs can be fairly straightforward. A regular fault that can afflict many air conditioners is when they appear to be working ok, but they just aren't cooling us anymore. If you find yourself in this situation, then the good news is that it most likely only needs cleaning. It is pretty straightforward to clean the air conditioner yourself, but as with any electrical item, care must be taken. You'd be well advised to thoroughly examine the owner's manual before you start.

Before you begin any maintenance on your air conditioner, make sure the power is switched off! The shut off panels are normally located on the air conditioner, but if you are having trouble finding then just shut off the power to your home. Also be sure that there's no debris near the condenser.

Now you're ready to see what the problem is with the air conditioner. Firstly, take the grill cover off the condenser. Then gently clean the fins with either a brush or a cloth. The fins can be easily damaged, so you will have to be careful. After you've finished brushing them then it's time to vacuum away any lingering dust. Now you need to unscrew the cover and lift it carefully off the grill. Now we're done with the cleaning, we have to hose the fins; however you'll need to protect the motor with a waterproof covering. This is also an opportune time to see if the motor might need greasing. Alright, you've finished cleaning you're air conditioner. Good job!

When you've reassembled the unit, you can turn the air conditioner on and see if your maintenance as helped. When you've turned it on, let it run for a couple of minutes and then put your hands on the pipes that run to the condenser, one pipe should feel hotter than the other. If the air conditioner still doesn't work, then there's a good chance the refrigerant needs recharging and a technician will need to be called in.

Air Conditioners - How to Cut Running Costs in Half

In today's world, most people have invested in one form of an air conditioner or another. We have either window air conditioners in our homes or central air conditioners. They keep us cool in the extreme summer heat without fail; however, have you ever set back and looked at the costs of running an air conditioner? When compared to the common household fan the amount of electricity required to run an air conditioner is phenomenal.

When using an air conditioner there are many different factors that can directly affect the cost of running it. These factors include the geographical location of your home, where you live and the amount of work the air conditioner has to do greatly influence the cost. If you live in an area that has mild summers and extremely cold winters, obviously your air conditioner will not have to work as hard. However, if you live in an area, that has warm winters and boiling summers the air conditioner will have to work double time to maintain comfort.

The difference in weather conditions from year to year will affect the costs as well. This is basically geared towards the difference in costs per year. One summer might be cooler than the next, which will lead to a greater bill.

The efficiency rating of your air conditioner plays an important role in the amount of electricity used. Most all appliances in today's world are rated, when you purchase an air conditioner it will have a tag telling you the amount of electricity that appliance uses. Look for air conditioners that use minimal electricity, which will save you money each year. If you have a model that is 10 years or older, it is definitely time to consider a new one.

Another important factor is the size of the air conditioner versus the house-cooling load. All air conditioners come in different sizes, and each will state the amount of space it is designed to cool. For example, an apartment could do with just one or two window air conditioners, while a three-bedroom house could not. Closely consider the amount of space you need to cool when considering an air conditioner. While larger air conditioners will cost more money, it will typically save you money in the long run on usage.

The setting on your thermostat greatly effects the cost. A higher setting will result in the air conditioner running less, while lowering the setting will cause it to run more often. One electric company suggests keeping the thermostat above 78 degrees. This can save you 10 to 20% on cooling costs.

Finally, the local cost of electricity influences the general cost of running your air conditioner. This is something you have no control over, however, you can control your own cost by saving energy.

Here is a general look at the difference of running an air conditioner vs. running a Ceiling or oscillating fan, at medium speed.

Running a central air conditioner that is three ton (and of average efficiency) for 8 hours per day for 15 days per month, with the average rate per kWh (kilowatt per hour) being 0.17, the average cost per month for the air conditioner alone will be $97.92. Amazing isn't it? This does not even include washer, dryer, lights, refrigerator, or stove, only the air conditioner.

On the other hand, running a ceiling fan or oscillating fan at medium speed, for 8 hours per day, for a full 30 days, at an average rate per kWh of 0.035 is only $1.43. With this comparison you could run 68 fans for a full month before you would reach the cost of the central air conditioning unit.

There are many other things you can do to lower you electric bill. Things such as, inspect, clean, or replace your air conditioner filters monthly. When you are not in your home, raise the temperature on your thermostat, keeping in mind pets when you do. Lower the temperature of your water heater to 120 degrees, wash only full loads in your dishwasher or clothes washer, and use the energy saving cycle on the dryer.

Other steps you can take include, replacing incandescent bulbs with fluorescent lamps, this could save up to 75% on lighting costs. You should also caulk all windows, doors, and pipes to prevent air leaks in or out, use weather stripping around windows, doors and pipes as well. Have your ducts tested for air leaks; leaking ducts can reduce the efficiency of your air conditioner by up to 20%.

Solar Cooling - Air Conditioning From the Sun

At first glance, solar cooling looks like an oxymoron. However, the same energy that can provide heat in the wintertime can also provide cooling during the summer.

Several passive cooling systems have been developed and tested. At their simplest, they rely on a coolant that absorbs and dissipates heat from the house. This could be a pool of water on the rooftop which absorbs seat from the inside of the house as it evaporates on exposure to the sun.

More sophisticated passive solar cooling systems have a solar collector which is shaded during the daytime. A storage medium collects heat during the day and dissipates it at night by exposing the solar collector to the cool night air.

Since the solar collector must be shaded, a retractable awning or overhang extension can be installed. Since the system can be reversed in the winter months, it is important that the solar collector can be exposed to sunshine if needed.

Solar panels can also be used to operate traditional air conditioners. As it happens, the periods of intense heat correspond to the periods of peak electricity production from photovoltaic cells. As long as you have solar panels which generate sufficient to electricity, you can operate air conditioners at no cost.

Solar cooling that does not take advantage of high technology is another possibility. The Romans used a system of running water to cool down exterior walls of their houses. The heat of the sun causes the water to evaporate and dissipate the heat within the house. This kind of system can be used on walls or on rooftops.

Heating and cooling are two of the biggest expenses for most households. Using solar energy to reduce this expense makes sense financially as well as ecologically. The less dependent we are on fossil fuels for heating and cooling the cleaner the environment will be.

Calculating your air conditioning requirements

The amount of heat generated is known as the heat gain or
heat load. Heat is measured in either British Thermal Units
(BTU) or Kilowatts (KW). 1KW is equivalent to 3412BTUs.

The heat load depends on a number of factors, by taking into
account those that apply in your circumstances and adding them
together a reasonably accurate measure of the total heat can be
calculated.

Factors include:

The floor area of the room

The size and position of windows, and whether they have
blinds or shades

The number of room occupants (if any)

The heat generated by equipment

The heat generated by lighting

Floor Area of Room

The amount of cooling required depends on the area of the
room. To calculate the area in square metres:

Room Area BTU = Length (m) x Width (m) x 337

Window Size and Position

If, your room has no windows, you can ignore this part of the
calculation. If, however there are windows you need to take the
size and orientation into account.

South Window BTU = South Facing window Length (m) x Width (m)
x 870

North Window BTU = North Facing windows Length (m) x Width
(m) x 165

If there are no blinds on the windows multiply the result(s)
by 1.5.

Add together all the BTUs for the windows.

Windows BTU = South Window(s) BTU + North Window(s) BTU

Occupants

You will have to take that into account people who normally
working in the space. The heat output is around 400 BTU per
person.

Total Occupant BTU = Number of occupants x 400

Equipment

Clearly most heat in a room is generated by the equipment.
This is trickier to calculate that you might think. The wattage
on equipment is the maximum power consumption rating, the actual
power consumed may be less. However it is probably safer to
overestimate the wattage than underestimate it.

Equipment BTU = Total wattage for all equipment x 3.5

Lighting

Take the total wattage of the lighting and multiply by 4.25.

Lighting BTU = Total wattage for all lighting x 4.25

Total Cooling Required

Add all the BTUs together.

Total Heat Load = Room Area BTU + Windows BTU + Total
Occupant BTU + Equipment BTU + Lighting BTU

This is the amount of cooling required so you need one or
more air conditioning units to handle that amount of heat.

The Cool Word on Air Conditioning

Keep your air conditioner clean and understand how it works, and you will get much better use out of it.

The natural order of things would normally mean that when something is cool, and the air around it is warm, it will also become warm. The seasons sunrooms and furniture "http://www.allsunrooms.com/fourseasons.html">four seasons sunrooms and furniture. Air conditioning systems take advantage of the laws of science to make something out of the ordinary happen: even though the air is warm, with air conditioning, you can have a cool house. And you don't even have to be scientific to make this happen, or even to keep it happening. Air conditioner maintenance is really very simple.

Most air conditioning problems come from clogged systems. There may be any number of reasons for this, but usually the reason is a drain line that is dirty.

Just compare the drain lines in your air conditioner to your arteries. We all know that clogged arteries lead to a heart attack, so if you don't want your air conditioner to have an attack, that is, stop functioning, make sure you keep these lines clear. Here is how: The air conditioning system has two main parts, the drain line and the condensate pan. When air conditioners cool the air in your home, they also take the moisture out of the home. This moisture is carried by the cooling coil into the drain line. The moisture that is carried off has a lot of different materials in it, such as minerals, mildew and dust. When these accumulate, the line becomes clogged. If you want to keep your air conditioning system humming, clean out the condensate lines at least once a quarter to make sure the fluid continues to flow through. This can be done with a coil cleaner made for that purpose, and a wire brush.

Another way to keep the system purring is to keep the filters on the air conditioner clean. Modern air conditioners have anti-microbial filters, so they trap mildew, mold and algae that may build up. This is good for your lungs, but bad for the filter. Change you filters once a month so that they are clear and clean and can do their job. The air in your home will stay clean and clear of these allergens and reduce medical problems. It will also prevent the house from being as dusty. If you have any allergy sufferers in your home, these are important features of the air conditioning system.

All air conditioning systems have spots where moisture builds, and these become depositories for mildew, mold, algae and dust. You can fight this buildup by spraying with a mild disinfectant if you do if often, but once the buildup is too great, you may have to have a professional do a thorough cleaning. If you want your air conditioning motor to stay in top form, follow the instructions to keep it clean. This will also keep the levels of algae, mildew and mold that can build up in the system at a minimum. Less dust will also be strewn around the house if the system is kept clean.

If anyone in your home has allergies, these allergies are being aggravated by pollen, dust mites and other allergens that are carried in the air. These family members will thank you for the cleaner air in the home.

Even if you do keep the unit clean, it is sometimes impossible to get rid of all pollutants. Air conditioners naturally carry moisture, and that is an invitation for algae, mold and mildew to accumulate. When too much of it accumulates, you may have to call in a professional to address the problem. But normally, just spraying a household disinfectant into the filter intake will allow the system to circulate it and eliminate this problem.

Keeping the unit functioning well mechanically is also important. You should put a small amount of oil specified for electric motors into the oil ports at least annually. When you have the system apart to do this, you should make sure that the fan for the blower motor is not caked with mildew or mold. As we stated, air conditioners take in warm air, cool it down and then expel the cool air into the house. (Obviously, warm air is then expelled outside the house.)The temperature in the ducts should be at least 15 to 25 degrees colder than the air inside the home. It will warm a bit before it is expelled. If you don't have this difference (you can check the temperature in the ducts with a stem or electron wire thermometer), check your filters, circuit breakers, lines, etc. The temperature difference should not be too small. If it is a problem you cannot find, you will have to call in the pros.

How a Central Air Conditioner Works

by Steve Boerger
A central air conditioning system is made up of four major components. Let's explore each component, and learn how a central air conditioner operates.

· The condenser - is the unit that sits outside your home and contains the compressor, condensing coil, fan and motor and all the system's electrical components.

· The evaporator - also known as the A coil - because of it's A shape, is installed inside your furnace's duct system. This coil must be properly matched to the outside unit and should always be replaced when you purchase a new cooling system in order to maintain maximum system efficiency and prolong the life of your new air conditioner.

· The line set - The line set is the copper tubing that connects the evaporator to the condenser. The black insulation or armaflex on this tubing keeps it from sweating as the cold refrigerant passes through it. The line set can normally be reused as long as it is properly sized, has no leaks and we are using the same type of refrigerant. We will cover the two types of refrigerants in just a moment.

· The blower - The blower is provided by your heating system, in other words, your furnace. This is arguably the most important part of your cooling system. Everything your new cooling system is capable of doing is dependant upon proper airflow through the A coil. If your blower is old or dirty it may move too little air and the cooling system will freeze up. Poor airflow will cause your lower level to get very cold and your upper floors to get very warm. This is a very common problem and one reason many customers consider replacing older furnaces when they replace their cooling system - the heat works fine but the airflow is marginal. However, if your furnace blower is in good shape replacing your heating system is not necessary.

Here's how an Air Conditioner System Works

A central air conditioner uses refrigerant, pumped by the compressor, to transport the hot air inside your home, outside. The condensing coil outside dumps the heat into the atmosphere while the A coil inside releases the cool air into your home at the same time absorbing heat and repeating the cycle again. The furnace fan distributes the cool air inside your home while the condenser fan dumps the hot air out side. That's why the air coming out the top of your condenser is hot - it's the hot air from your home. The cold air coming out of your vents is the result of the refrigerant evaporating in the A coil - that's why they call it an evaporator. Of course it's not quite that simple, but for our purposes lets leave it at that.

Conservatory Air Conditioning

Having purchased your conservatory have you thought of how you are going to heat and cool it? During the summer months having blinds fitted is very important but they will only help to prevent solar gain i.e. if you sit below a sheet of glass in the sun you will get hot, solar blinds will help to prevent that, but they cannot reduce the temperature of your conservatory.

Air conditioning keeps your conservatory cool let me give you an example if the temperature outside your conservatory is 80 deg I would expect the temperature inside your conservatory to be 80 deg plus, that's a bit hot do I hear you say, well with air conditioning you stay cool.

It makes sense to have air conditioning. Due increasing global warming we nearly all work in air conditioned offices or shops, eat in air conditioned restaurants, travel in air conditioned coaches, planes and boats and complain when the air conditioning has not been switched on because we get too hot. So why deprive yourself at home install it your conservatory and be comfortable.

Conservatory air conditioning works hand in glove with conservatory blinds, the blinds prevent the solar gain and the air conditioning keeps your conservatory at a temperature that is comfortable for you, just set the remote thermostat and that it, cool air!

The other side of air conditioning systems is that they also heat that right cold and hot air from the one unit, this is due to a gizmo called a heat pump, which is very efficient and above all cheap to run. Theses units sit on the outside of your conservatory and are whisper quite when running. Therefore you don't have to purchase heaters or extend your central heating system to heat your conservatory; you can have one of these systems installed at about the same cost as extending your central heating system.

Industrial Air Conditioning

Air conditioners have become such an indispensable part of almost all environments that it is quite difficult to imagine an environment without air conditioning. Many households, offices, schools, colleges and industries are opting for air conditioners to ensure the comfort of those inside.

Air conditioners are vitally essential in industries for many reasons. First, many industries involve mechanical work that is very tiresome and can generate a great amount of heat. Heat causes workers to tire and sweat. Air conditioning does a good job of cooling workers down by reducing the overall temperature of the environment. It also circulates the air and reduces the humidity in the room and allows for a healthier climate. This is not only important for workers; it also helps keep machines from over heating, which could be catastrophic to any industry. Thanks to all of these benefits air conditioning, is an absolute essential in any industry.

Industrial air conditioning has a higher intensity than normal air conditioning. At most industries, normal air conditioners would make little difference in the quality of the air. That is way most industries install centralized air conditioning. These centralized industrial air conditioners have a very high range and can reach almost all parts of the building with a wide network of ducts. There are also ‘air condition boosters’ at different points in the network of ducts to make sure that the air circulation has flows quickly and efficiently.

Many industries use natural gas centralized air conditioning, as opposed to electric air conditioning to cut down on costs and make the surroundings environmentally friendly.

How To Avoid 5 Costly Mistakes With Your Air Conditioning System

How To Avoid 5 Costly Mistakes With Your Air Conditioning System

We all know that air conditioning systems are expensive to buy and install. You’ve worked hard to earn the money for your heating and conditioning unit. So it makes sense to look after it as well as possible to reduce any repair costs. You don’t want to have to spend lots more money on repairs or, even worse, on having to replace it.

Costly mistake No 1 – You Have High Repair Bills

The best way to avoid costly problems is to have your equipment serviced regularly by a qualified air conditioning contractor or service engineer. A good engineer will be able to undertake a series of tests to keep your system and ductwork up to scratch.

It’s recommended that you have a service done twice a year, in the spring and the fall.

Do you know the US Department of Energy has a 9-point plan for air conditioning servicing? You can get full details from a free report on air conditioning servicing.

When you have a service you need to make sure that the technician cleans the ventilation system filters or better still, replaces them. They can become clogged which reduces the volume and quality of the air flow.

Costly Mistake No. 2 You Spend Too Much On Electricity

Air conditioning and heating systems consume electricity. Period. And the bills can get pretty high too if you aren’t careful. So how can you minimize your power costs.

The easiest way to keep down your power costs is to ensure the efficient running of your HVAC unit. You need to keep the compressor (condenser) which is the box outside the house, as clean as possible. This will prevent it from overheating or getting unwanted debris in the unit.

You should also make sure the system is optimally set for your home. Again, your technician or service contractor will be able to do this for you.

Costly Mistake No. 3 Reduced System Life

Like any other form of mechanical equipment, your air conditioner will last longer if it is properly serviced. All mechanical parts need to be monitored and cleaned from time-to-time.

The filters of your system will get clogged with dirt and other particulates. It’s inevitable. It’s just part of the operating process. If you don’t have the filters cleaned and the ductwork maintained, then you are putting the whole unit at risk. So when you have a service, make sure that your technician cleans the ventilation system filters or better still, replaces them.

Costly Mistake No. 4 Reduced performance

If the filters become clogged it will reduce the volume and quality of the air flow into your home.

Costly Mistake No. 5 Risking damage to your health

There are many stories about dangers to your health from air conditioners but the truth is that if you have your system maintained regularly then it is quite safe. However, if you allow the filters to become blocked or the ducts to be dirty then you are creating a breeding ground for mold and bacteria which is then spread throughout the building.

So, with all of the common mistakes, the solution is simple – proper and regular maintenance to save you money and maintain your health.

Central Heating and Air Conditioning Suffolk, Virginia

Don't forget to have your Central Heating and Air Conditioning checked out before the extreme cold weather arrives.

We would like to be able to turn our central air conditioning and heating units on and have them deliver the exact temperature from the time they are turned on till the time they are turned off.. Realistically that is not how it works, some systems give us a lot of problems in regard to providing sufficient heating and cooling to meet our needs. Many folks prefer it very hot or very cold and that strains the systems to their limits. This high level of usage causes the systems to break down more frequently. This sometimes explains why one household has significantly more maintenance service calls for heating and cooling than other similar households.

Due to these factors, it is important for us to determine whether the heating and air conditioning units HVAC is running efficiently, or running poorly. Certainly when it is putting out hot or cold air it is working, but is it working too hard. If it is working harder than the design allows, it will fail more frequently and cause extensive repair bills.

Smiley Heat And Cool

Sometimes we compare your heating and cooling unit to your car. When the motor runs efficiently it fails less and gives us more miles per gallon. A heating and cooling unit is very similar. If we provide the system with regular maintenance and care, it will last longer and operate using less energy. Therefore it costs less to operate and uses less electricity therefore less power costs.

When a central heating and cooling unit (air conditioning or furnace) is properly maintained, it should last between 12 and 15 years with minimum down time. In some cases the HVAC system will last many more years than this… Some have been known to run for 30 years with absolutley no problems. However this is truly the exception and not the norm. If your HVAc system runs for 30 years, consider yourself blessed.

Later in this article you will find many maintenance tips that will allow your heating and cooling system to run longer with less emergency maintenace requirements. I would like to offer some suggestions that will keep the unit from running too hard. For example if you keep the intake filter clean the system can get air more easily and the unit will not be required to work as hard. Less hard work for the mechanical systems means less wear and tear and longer life overall. Make sense? I thought it would.

Pay close attention to make sure that your system is draining properly, and that draining is normal, and is not to be considered to be a leak.. However you must inspect to make sure the draining is not a leak. The first thing is to make sure that your unit is not leaking and is draining as it should. If too much water is allowed to remain in the system, or oppositely that too much is allowed to escape, then your air conditioner is not running as it should.

Check all hose connections for cracks or leaks, and make sure the condensate tube is able to drain without restrictions. Change the filter frequently at least every 4-6 weeks would normally be considered sufficient. If afamily member suffers from allergies either minor or severe, then a clean filter is a must and will be very beneficial to them.

If you have any questions or just simply want someone to check out your system to make sure it is operating efficiently, feel free to call Smiley Heating and Cooling for your every need. You will find our specially factory trained technicians all over Hampton Roads from Chesapeake, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, Newport News and in the North Carolina area we are rapidly expanding into Elizabeth City, Hertford, Edenton, Chowan County, Gates County, and even Camden Courtyard. Hotels and Air conditioning: Some Aspects

Mumbai the commercial capital of India, with a large population of over 12 million, is in need of hotel rooms to meet the growing business and tourist traffic. Currently Mumbai has over half a dozen new hotels in the 5-star and 4-star category, either in the construction or planning stage. This article should be of interest to new owners, consultants and contractors involved in the HVAC systems of hotels.

Expecting in the case of low budget suburban and rural hotels, all the other hotels provide air conditioning facilities in the guest rooms and most of the public spaces, as a mater of course. There are several types of hotels which have typical characteristics. Table 1 shows some of the features of the better quality product.

Some aspects of design

In low budget hotels, 3-star and lower, window and split units for the guest rooms is a general norm with packaged units for the restaurant and public spaces wherever required. For hotels of say 70 rooms and over, it is generally a centralised system with chilled water produced at a central space and distributed to the various rooms and spaces for cooling through appropriate air handling and fan coil units. These central air-conditioning plants present considerable scope for design and innovation. Some of the aspects are discussed here.

Table 1Types of Hotel
Type Avg persons Per Room Features
Luxury
5-star
1.2 to 1.3Large rooms & public areas multiple restaurants, Function areas.
Convention Hotels1.5 to 1.7Large number of rooms, large lobbies, convention halls and meeting rooms, multiple restaurants.
Resort1.8 to 2.4Spacious public spaces, clustered rooms with or without kitchenettes and leisure facilities.
3-star Hotels 1.5 to 1.8Limited public areas, smaller rooms with adequate Decor, one or two multi-cuisine restaurants.

Guest Rooms

A hotel means guest rooms. All other areas are the to support a comfortable say for the guest. Nearly 60% of the air conditioning goes to guest rooms. The air conditioning needs to provide.

  • Comfortable room temperature and humidity.
  • Personalised control over the room environment.
  • Adequate ventilation for good air quality in the room and also the toilet.
  • Equipment of low noise level
  • Easy maintenance.

Comfortable room temperature rules between 20 deg. C to 24 deg. C db and a humidity of anywhere between 50 to 65% rh. Typically a guest room has large external window which by and large, influences the room load. The guest room profile in Fig.1 displays the overwhelming influence of the east and west facing rooms. Chopping of the prominent peaks could bring about healthy savings in the cooling load.

Fig.01

Human comfort is not a mere metabolic heat-balance. Even in an otherwise perfectly balanced environment, some subjects were found complaining and restless because there is no room thermostat to control and monitor their environment. It is for this reason that a personalised room control thermostat is an indispensable though psychological element of comfort.

Ventilation to the guest rooms is a much debated design parameter. The minimum requirement is 15 cm per person to maintain minimum indoor CO--- concentration and odor perceptions of 80% of visitors. This does not take into account the emission of radon and formaldehyde from building construction materials. This also does not consider the pollution level of the outside air. These two items are imponderable. With a profitable occupancy of two persons per room, a ventilation rate of not less than 40 cfm seems to meet the need. The toilet ventilation by way of exhaust needs 6 to 8 air changes, being a private toilet, and that would be anywhere from 40cfm to 60 cfm. Ventilation air for the room varies therefore from 40 to 60 cfm. In addition, the guest room corridor is also supplied with pre-conditioned outside air, to simplify ducting and distribution. Fig.2 shows the load profile for a 550 room property. The contribution from the ventilation air is enormous and this could be reduced by 60-80% by an appropriate air-to-air heat recovery between the toilet exhaust and outside air. Saving could also be achieved by employing recirculation of he corridor air as well.

The fan coil unit is a universal selection for a guest room. Units need to be selected for achieving a design goal of NC 30-35 in the room.

Fig.02

Public Areas

Public areas can be-divided as shown in table 2.

Table 2Types of Public Areas
24-hour spaces
Lobbies, front office, coffee shop
Food outlets Restaurants
Function spacesBanquets, Ball Rooms, Meeting rooms
Back of the houseAdministration, Kitchens, Laundry, Store etc.

24-hour space

Lobbies are characterised by varying occupancy and outside air ingress. It is always desirable to have an airlock or a revolving dour to minimize uncontrolled outside air entry. Variation of he ventilation air according to the occupancy could result in substantial energy savings. This could be through modulation of he ventilation air damper through an IAQ sensor or a small packaged heat recovery device. Such steps pay back in 8 to 15 thousand operating hours which means 12-20 months period in a 24-hour operating hours regime. 24-Hour coffee shop is similar to a lobby without the problems of outside air ingress. Typical load profile is in Fig.3.

Fig.03

Food outlets

Food outlets have typically high lighting loads, food odour, (particularly Asian Cuisines) display kitchens and varying occupancy. Odour control land a display kitchen demand large amount of ventilation air, even when make-up kitchen hoods are used.
Recirculation systems have been found to be wanting in exercising a desired odour control even with ventilation rates of over 25-30 cfm per person. 100% outside air circulation with a supply and return fan and an air-to-air heat recovery system would present a viable and economic alternative. In Russia, such a system is mandatory. Fig 4. Shows load profiles for recirculation and once thru' air conditioning systems for a typical restaurant.

Fig.04

The bar is another area where the occupancy is highly varying and where tobacco smoke control is a demanding design need. A once-thru' systems is an ideal solution. The major problem in adopting such systems is an ideal solution. The major problem in adopting such systems is the larger air handling unit space to accommodate a return fan and a heat exchanger and openings for outside air intake and exhaust.

Function Spaces
Heavy and varying occupancy, very high lighting loads and relative humidity control are the design characteristics to reckon in banquet halls, ball rooms, board rooms and meeting rooms. Because of short time occupancy, the ventilation air could be 15 cfm per person to control body odours but it is desirable to have lower space dry bulb temperature of say 70-72F to offset higher mean radiant temperature due to dense occupancy and also to reduce latent load.

A system of variable speed drive could be a standard design to cope with varying occupancy. In such a system, an IAQ sensor should monitor and control the ventilation air quantity.
Health Clubs are very low occupancy areas where a variable volume system will optimize the plant utilisation. Where a gymnasium form part of the club, it is preferable to have a separate air handling unit.

Back Of The house
These areas are administration, kitchen and laundry. More and more hotels are going in for air-conditioning of kitchens and laundries. An ideal system would have been 100% outside air with heat recovery but problems are faced in a heat recovery equipment because of grease in the kitchen and lint in the laundry.
  • Independent supply and exhaust systems for the kitchen hoods.
  • A re-circulating system for the remaining kitchen with 10 to 12% ventilation air.
  • The kitchen in the net will remain under negative pressure.
The load density is in the region of 80-100 BTU per sq.ft. While maintaining a space temperature of 27-29 deg. C db.

Likewise in a laundry, the exhaust air from the tumbler dryer and flat work ironer could have independent supply and exhaust system while a recirculation system similar to a kitchen will maintain a space temperature 27 Ð’± 1 deg.C . The load density in a laundry is more on account of hot body radiation and steps to minimise such radiation will greatly improve the comfort level. Another contribution comes from leaking steam traps and poor insulation and cladding of the steam and condensate pipes.

Refrigeration Equipment

Electricity is one of the major expenses in a hotel and the specific consumption varies from 50 to 100 kwh per available room. It depends on the location, building envelop, class of service, efficiency of the plant and machinery and of course the energy management. A median figure is about 60-65 kwh. At the current average rate of Rs. 4.5/kwh the electricity charges range from 3% to 15% of the room rental (see Fig. 5).

Fig.05

Of the specific consumption, as much as 45-50% is consumed in the air conditioning and allied plant. Out of this 40 to 50% goes towards the refrigeration plant while the remainder is contributed by, pumps, cooling towers, air handling unit, etc. It is for this reason that selection of the main refrigeration plant assumes importance what with the variety of plant now available in the country.

Table 3 shows the variety of equipment available in the market to make up a central plant and the IKW/TR indicates these are some of the figures thrown about in the market. With shortage of electricity and ever increasing tariffs, vapor absorption systems gained ground. These systems also merited 100% depreciation as they are listed as energy saving equipment. With changes in the rules of administered price mechanism for hydrocarbons, it has become necessary to assess the plant selections almost every year. Fig. 5 exhibits the per unit energy costs v/s cost per TR Hr. It is easy to establish the breakeven of various systems from Fig.6.

Almost every hotel has 100% captive generators which rust on their foundations since they are called upon to run not even 300 hours in year Most of the engines are 2-stroke high speed (1500 rpm) turbocharged and after cooled units which are cheaper Slower speed engines using cruder oils will be slightly more expensive but the cost of generation (fuel cost) is much more economical most of the State Electricity Boards and Public Utilities are eager to allow captive generators to be put to beneficial use.

Fig.06

This gives the hotelier considerable advantage

  • In keeping the generating sets in good working order.
  • Produce power at much lower cost than the utility and substantially reduce the power bill.
Advent of natural gas in Mumbai and Delhi has added a new dimension to the equipment selections. When the availability of natural gas and its price get stabilized, natural gas could be a prime fuel for not only he air-conditioning but also heating loads, kitchens and laundry equipment.

Some Heating And Air Conditioning Tips For You

Do you realize blameless how to a high degree important it is to keep your home heating and air conditioning unit running smoothly and efficiently. No indecision you realize that by doing this you will cut your utility bills. True - but-end did you besides realize that through keeping them running efficiently you be able to extend their operational life greatly — thus saving you the tremendously high cost of entire replacement of these units?

First things first: Before you do anything else, make sure that you have in a strict sense prepared your household so that it is more power energetic. There are some simple things that each homeowner should do, such as adding (or upgrading the quality of) your interior insulation, adding caulking and weatherstripping, and flat the investment in a programmable digital thermostat can make a big distinction in your capacity of work consumption.

Perhaps you’ve done the whole of of that, and are facile for to a greater degree. In that case, you can install a humidifier toward your entire house. The additional moisture in the hibernate will structure you feel great quantity warmer. In adding to installing the humidifier, you can lever a certain number of ceiling fans. You have power to operate them in the two the summer and winter months - uncorrupt reverse the direction of the use a fan upon blades to handle cooler verses hotter air.

But of course: do sure that you have your air conditioner, furnace or excite pump inspected before the start of eddish heady and cooling season. They can perform cleaning and other preventative maintenance, and this behest help be faithful to small problems from decorous big, expensive ones.

One of your greatest allies is the conduct. They, as well as manifold non-profit organizations, maintain resource websites with all sorts of information. And granting that you are in need of a reproach-new unit, make firm that you look against one that has met the qualifications to be listed as an ENERGY STAR appliance. These are expedients that are very efficient - the ones that you distress to consider purchasing.

What are some of those online resources? Well you can go to www.consumerguide.com . Or you can go to the EPA (The Environmental Protection Agency) at www.epa.gov, or the American Council for Energy Efficient Economy at www.aceee.org. You can provide those ENERGY STAR resources I mentioned in the previous paragraph at www.energystar.gov.

A word of caution: on the supposition that you are thinking of replacing your furnace, caloric pump unit, or air conditioner, DON”T DO IT! Why not? Because installing (for example well as servicing) these appliances requires the habit of special tools, as sound as know-how, that the average layperson is not privy to. If you go about to install the one yourself, and don’t do it the fitly way, everything be pleased have to be taken out and done completely throughout — by a professional. You might furthermore send out your manufacturer warranty, so put on’t tolerate the chance.

Again, granting that your equipment needs repairs, don’t take on that you be possible to repair it — you be possible to’t. If you poke around your HVAC rigging you could hurt yourself, loss the equipment further, and also void your manufacturer security. Get a endure of a welfare HVAC man, and use him — you won’t require to worry about the job going wrong, and will stand still comfortable experienced that you desire get years and years from your modern air conditioner or furnace.

Air Conditioning Information

When it comes time for you to have to choose from the different residential heating and air conditioning options, the most important thing to remember is that the decision is up to you. Regardless of what other people have, you want to make sure that what you get is what is going to make you the most comfortable and satisfied.

In order to do this properly, you should do your homework and ask for a trained professional for advice tailored to your home or office size and heating or cooling requirements. After all your home is your palace, and you want to make sure that it is as comfortable as possibly for you year round, especially during extreme heat or cold. You wouldn’t want to pay through your nose and then find out later that there were things you could do to keep those residential heating and air conditioning bills down.

Inquire at your home improvement store for other DIY tips for conserving energy such as plastic sheeting on windows to trap air and closing vents that you do not use.

The most common uses of modern air conditioners are for comfort cooling in buildings and transportation vehicles, and there are many different types of systems in this regards that you have to choose from.

Comfort Applications

There are two different air conditioning applications in particular which are important to know about; they are comfort applications and process applications. Comfort applications are those which aim to provide an indoor environment that remains relatively constant in a range that is basically preferred by humans, despite certain changes in external weather conditions or internal heat loads.

Comfort air conditioning is the type of air conditioning application which makes deep plan buildings feasible. This is because without proper air conditioning, buildings must be built narrower or with light wells so that inner spaces will be able to receive sufficient outdoor air via natural ventilation.

Process Applications

On the other hand, process applications are the ones which aim to provide a suitable environment for a process being carried out, and this is really regardless of internal heat and humidity loads. It is the needs of the process which are what truly determine the conditions, and not human preference, as one may have thought at first.

Window air conditioners represent a comfort application and come in a variety of models and sizes so each customer should shop carefully before making any purchase. A window air conditioning unit that is too big will not cool the room efficiently. The unit might turn on and off too much because it is too big for the room, and this will cause it to lose its effectiveness sooner than necessary. The machine might stop cooling before the humidity is completely removed from the room if the window air conditioning unit is too big. Removing the humidity from the room is an important part of the unit’s work in providing a comfortable environment.

A window air conditioning unit, including portable air conditioners, can make a substantial difference in utility bills. Some of the units manufactured recently are made to work efficiently to save on the energy necessary to power the unit. These units are marked clearly with information on the energy efficiency. The best models could make a significant difference in monthly energy bills. There are consumer reports that provide information on each unit. Some of these units work more quietly than others, and some of them are accurate in keeping the desired temperature. All of these units look similar, but they are not necessarily equal.

The Need for Heating and Air Conditioning Technicians - HVAC

Regardless of where you live, people need heating or air conditioning HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning) job opportunities are dramatically increasing all over the United States. While the need for Air Conditioning and Heating Technicians steadily rises, the amount of trained graduates to fulfill the positions has not. Because of this, HVAC technicians are finding themselves with great job security as well as increasing salaries. Here are just a few reasons why more people are turning towards a career in the HVAC field everyday:

    1. HVACR certification requires quick and easy training that often lasts as little as nine months. According to Jon Cline of RSIAZ, a heating and air conditioning training school in Phoenix, Arizona, Of the approximately 7,000 technicians trained in 2004, very few graduated from other than a career school such as ours. Traditionally, career school programs for HVACR are from 6 to 15 months. Graduates of accelerated training programs find a high employment demand and starting salaries in the range of $32,000 to $35,000 with as little as six months of training.

    CASE STUDY:

    Typical Program breakdown:

    Day Program Night Program

Electrical Technologies 3 months 4 months

    Refrigeration Air Conditioning and
Heating Technologies 6 months 9 months

    Electro-Mechanical
    Technologies 8 months 12 months

Mechanical Maintenance 12 months 24 months

Graduates from the Electro-Mechanical course have completed the Air Conditioning, Refrigeration Heating AND Electrical portion of our course. Therefore when they graduate they are an Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, and Heating Technician AND an Electrician. This is important to employers because they only need to hire one person to perform both functions.

Graduates of the Associate of Occupational Studies in of Mechanical Maintenance Engineering add an additional 5 months of training to the Electro-Mechanical Course to prepare a graduate to work in the large commercial industry.

    2. The demand for HVAC technicians and engineers is high and steadily increasing, thus the wages are much higher than similar jobs in the labor industry.

    3. Because most unions and employers only require less than 2 years of training, a career in HVAC costs much less then a four year school.

It is no wonder why heating and air conditioning technician jobs are one of the fastest growing employment opportunities in the world, and they offer involvement in business ownership. In fact the U.S Department of Labor estimates that there will be a 17% increase of jobs in this field over the next 2 years.

Why are heating and air conditioning technician jobs at a premium?

Heating ventilation and air conditioning is a very important factor in residential homes as well as businesses, this is because being comfortable is something every aspects whether its in their cubicle or bedroom. Heat ventilation installment only requires two semesters of training.

Little known facts about HVAC ( Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning) jobs:

    - An average hourly wage for a certified worker can be as much as $10-15 higher when compared to a non-union worker in the HVAC industry.

    - Due to the overwhelming demand for heating and air conditioning technicians many technicians clear $200.00 a day without a college degree.

    - Because of the extensive training in the HVAC industry business ownership is highly implicated in these fields

Our Air Conditioning Services ensure you stay cool this season with a full system check. Out NATE Certified heating and AC specialists are trained to diagnose, repair, or replace any part of your HVAC System for total indoor comfort.

When considering purchasing a new Air Conditioner for your home, you should know that today's best air conditioners use 30% to 50% less energy to produce the same amount of cooling as Air Conditioners from the early 1990s. Even if your Air Conditioner is only 10 years old, you may be able to save up to 40% of your cooling energy costs by replacing it with a newer, and more efficient model from Quigley Heating and Air Conditioning Services.

Our Comfort Specialist can perform a load calculation to be certain the new HVAC system you buy or own is properly sized to your house.

Our Air Conditioning and Heating experts will determine your unit’s efficiency, performance, durability, and initial cost depending on matching its size to the following factors:

The size of your home and the number of windows it has
The amount of shade on your home's windows, walls, and roof
How much insulation is in the ceilings and walls of your home
The amount of air that leaks into your home from outside
The amount of heat the appliances and occupants in your home generate

We know air conditioning and heating services: Know that a larger Air Conditioner will not provide the best cooling. Buying an oversized Air Conditioner will only cost more and reduce your heating and cooling efficiency. The larger-than-necessary air conditioner will cycle on and off more frequently, which will reduce its efficiency. Frequent cycling makes indoor temperatures change more and results in a less than comfortable environment. Frequent cycling also reduces moisture removal. In humid climates like the Park Cities in Dallas, removing moisture is critical for comfort. This cycling also wears out the electrical parts and compressor more rapidly. A larger Air Conditioner will use more electricity and create added demands on electrical generation and delivery systems.

Are you looking for home heating radiators?

Do you have an older home that requires an old-fashion cast iron radiator?

If you are looking for old-style cast iron radiators there is a great resource that has a wide selection (over 2500) of cast iron radiators, some that are truly works of art

The site also has a sizing guide to help you choose the right heat output.

Take a look at what they offer.

Are you building a new home or creating an addition to your home and looking for a comfortable solution?

The modern version of home heating radiators is much different than their older counterparts.

These are referred to as designer radiators and many are imported from Europe.

If you’ve visited Europe you probably have seen radiators that are referred to as flat panel radiators.

These are the most common type and least expensive of modern heating radiators.

Of all the radiators my company has installed, the most popular is the towel warmer (towel radiator) for the bath.

It serves double-duty as a great source of heat for the bathroom and for keeping your towels dry and warm.

To get an idea of options and possibilities check out the following catalogues:

Vasco High End Designer Radiators (pdf)

    Radson Mid-Range Designer Radiators (pdf)

As you can see, European radiator manufacturers look at radiator design as an art form.

    They call it "Beautiful Warmth".

    Heating Systems

There are a variety of heating systems to choose from today.

Most are chosen based on geographic location, fuel availability, fuel costs and one’s lifestyle.

One of the most popular systems in the U.S. is the forced air heating system. It consists of a furnace that is attached to a duct system that moves heated air to areas of the house.

Hydronic heating systems (hot water) are more popular in the colder regions of the U.S. and air the predominant choice in Europe.

Hydronic systems use a boiler to heat water that is pumped through a network of piping to either radiators, finned-baseboard radiation or a fan-coil.

Radiant floor heating systems (a form of hydronic heating) are gaining popularity in many homes.

Warm water is circulated through tubing that is embedded in concrete or tubing that is installed either below or on top of a sub floor.

Geothermal heat pump systems, long considered an alternative energy system are now becoming part of the mainstream.

These systems use the same technology as a refrigerator.

A compressor pumps a refrigerant through a series of coils.

The refrigerant vaporizes at a low temperature and is able to transfer heat from the ground into the building through a series of pipes containing a glycol (anti-freeze) solution.

Heating fuel types that are available are:

    • natural gas
    • fuel oil
    • propane (LP)
    • electricity
    • solar

Solar heating and water heating are now being promoted because of escalating fuel prices and the environmental impact of fossil fuels.

One of the simplest heating systems is a space heater.

This is a device that is usually designed for open spaces or large rooms.

As you can see, there are myriad heating systems available.

Each of these have their place, depending on one’s needs.

    The choice is yours!

Options to Tackle High Heating Bill

Most of the homeowners in the Bay Area have probably had their furnace running for a few weeks now. This is about the time when the first heating bill arrives for the season. Obviously the amount will correlate to the size of the home and usage pattern. But it is worth spending some time reviewing if you feel it is excessive for the size of your home. In general if the bill is over $200 there may be opportunity to save that will have a quick payback.

There are a couple places to trim your heating bill. Firstly, if you are not using a programmable thermostat you should strongly consider it. Sometimes a furnace is left on when the house is not occupied or when it is not required to be heated. Those can be avoided if a digital programmable thermostat is set up properly. It is relatively inexpensive as a basic thermostat can be had for less than $50 from Home Depot.

Secondly, if your ducts were installed over 20 years ago you should have it checked for leakage. California Energy Commission have done a study indicating that the average leakage rate for older homes is around 30%. That means $0.3 of each dollar is spent heating or cooling your crawlspace/attic. That can be reduced greatly if the system is properly sealed. A duct leakage test can be done to analyze your current status. PG&E also has rebates from $350-$600 to encouraged homeowners to seal their ducts. In certain situations the rebate may be enough to cover the cost of sealing.

Thirdly, if your furnace is over 15-20 years old it may also be a source of inefficiency. There are modern furnaces that are rated at over 95% AFUE. A 20-30 year old furnace is probably running at 60-75% so a significant saving will be seen if it is replaced.

Next time we will discuss more about duct leakage and duct sealing.
